The Symptoms of Acid Reflux

Acid reflux occurs when the acid and undigested food in your stomach flow back upward — or reflux — into your esophagus. The esophagus is the muscular tube that is designed to carry food from your throat down to your stomach.

Reflux is but one of many unpleasant acid reflux symptoms. You probably don't encounter these acid reflux symptoms with each meal nor do you encounter them daily. You may not even have some acid reflux symptoms for many weeks prior to flaring up again. Acid reflux is a lifelong illness you'll have to treat throughout your life.

Heartburn is the acid reflux symptom many people today recognize. This painful burning sensation occurs on your chest after you eat a large meal or if you lie down after one. Heartburn is caused by stomach acid literally burning its way through your esophagus.

Reflux and Regurgitation

Regurgitation occurs when stomach acid backs up from the stomach in your throat and into your mouth. Your throat will burn and you'll discover a bitter taste in your mouth. Perhaps you will find little food particles coming back up into your mouth.

Nausea is one of the less common acid reflux symptoms you may encounter. Occasionally nausea is credited as an acid reflux symptom when there's not any other cause for this.
