LIDAR stands for Light Detection And Ranging. Airborne LIDAR systems require the integration of the three main technologies including the reference position, attitude or reference laser pointing, and start the reference laser.

A laser pulse is sent to the ground and reflecting back is timed, the distance based on the speed of light divided by 2 is calculated, and then integrated with GPS data and IMU to determine the X, Y, Z each laser reflection. A lidar instrument principally consists of a laser, a scanner, and a specialized GPS receiver. Airplanes and helicopters are the most commonly used platforms for acquiring lidar data over broad areas. Two types of lidar are topographic and bathymetric.
